About imagecolorpick.app
What this site is
imagecolorpick.app is a free tool for getting exact color codes out of your own images: photos, logos, screenshots and scans. It also builds palettes from images and converts between HEX, RGB, HSL and CMYK. It is published by Takreparation Skåne AB in Ängelholm, Sweden.
How it works
- Reading pixels: your browser decodes the image and draws it on an HTML canvas, applying the photo’s rotation note. The page reads the red, green, blue and transparency values of each pixel from the canvas (getImageData). Large images are read at up to 4096 pixels on the longest side.
- Palettes: up to 10,000 evenly spread pixels from a reduced copy of the image are grouped with k-means, started with k-means++. Transparent pixels are skipped. The groups’ average colors, sorted by size, are the palette. This runs in a Web Worker.
- Formulas: HEX is the RGB values in base 16. HSL uses the standard conversion from the CSS specification. CMYK uses the simple formula K = 1 − max(R, G, B), without a color profile, and is labelled approximate.
- Color names: the nearest CSS named color, measured as distance in the CIELAB color space.
How we test it
Known colors are checked against their standard values, for example #FF0000 = rgb(255, 0, 0) = hsl(0, 100%, 50%) = cmyk(0, 100, 100, 0). Automated browser tests at desktop and phone sizes pick pixels from test images, build palettes, check that transparent pixels are ignored, test the converters and copy buttons, and confirm that no request leaves the site except anonymous page view counting.
No account, no uploads
There is nothing to sign up for, and images are never uploaded. The site counts page views with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which uses no cookies. See the privacy page for details.
